My mother in law has a tree in backyard and I would like to have chestnuts on hand for a snack during the winter months.
How long will Chestnuts keep? Can you freeze them before you roast them?
Chestnuts can last in a fridge for up to two months. They can be frozen but first have to be indivually froze. Lay them on a cookie sheet, freeze for 3 to 4 hrs, then place them in a air-tight container, and back to the freezer. When you are ready to use them thaw them out in you fridge overnight. Then place them on your counter for 45 minutes to bring to room temperture. Leaving them on the counter helps to dry them out a bit. Cut a "X" in the bottoms, roast in a 400 degree oven for 10 to 12 minutes. While they are still warm peel away the outer casing and enjpy! Hope this helps!
