Fed up with my bleached hair and want to go darker would like some good advice?

My hair has 75% bleached highlights with 25% darker blonde/brown streaks in. I am naturally mid brown with red tones in. My hair has been described as porous although it does seem in better condition than it was several months ago. I went to the hairdressers and had semi-permanent light chestnut streaks put in and it lasted about four washes - it was supposed to last about 20! I then had some permanent darker streaks in a couple of months later which seem to be staying in ok and not fading although I was warned they would because my hair is porous. I want to go a warm light chestnut with perhaps auburn or copper tones all over but am fed up with going to the hairdressers and spending tons of money - any advice as to what my hair would do if I bought either a permanent or semi-permanent colour from the shop and did it myself - would it go orange or green!!!

You need to go to a supply store like Sally's and pick out a color that is as close to the color you want. If it does not have red tones in it, you can always get a bottle of the chesnut and a bottle of a red/auburn and mix them. You then should use a 20 or 30 volume developer. 20 has less peroxide than 30, so I would do 20. Mix 3/4 chesnut with 1/4 auburns. Depending on the length of your hair you may need more than just one bottle of each. Add an equal amount of the developer and leav in hair for 20 minutes. This should give you the look you want
Reply:I wouldn't recommend you trying to color your hair yourself. If your hair is bleached it could turn out orange or green depending on what the base of the color is. I would suggest going to a different salon or stylist. It is very interesting to me that your hair isn't holding color, generally if your hair is porous it will grab color and stain especially on the ends (my own personal experience). What ever product they are using sounds like it was a bad product or maybe your hair simply isn't that porous.
Reply:Right now my hair is my natural dark brown color.... BUT I had bleached hair then I dyed a Golden Brown over it and it came out GORGEOUS. I've NEVER had my hair turn green but it did turn orange once when I tried to do a color with red pigments.

Anyways, just get a permanent medium brown color because since your hair is so light IT WILL FADE to a lighter brown. I never EVER go to the hair salon because I think its just waaaaaay to expensive.
Reply:HI, go with something simple and sexy and do it your self by the way your hair would turn yellow-green
Reply:i wouldnt even attempt to darken it incase you end up with a blue rinse !
Reply:Adding a color is not going to turn your hair orange or green. Don't worry about that at all. BLEACHING is what turns darker hair orange/yellow/brassy. Chlorine buildup (from pools usually) is the only thing that will turn bleached hair green...

You should have no trouble at all using a shampoo in color yourself, but that'll be ONE color. It will probably affect the blonder sections of your hair differently than the darker sections (which will look fine - don't worry). However, it's doubtful that you'll be lucky enough to get the copper or auburn tones you want by chance. I think you'd have to do a second process to achieve that.

Good luck, and don't be afraid to add color. It's stripping color that causes all the horror stories you hear.
