English Help?

I am reading this book and below is a passage from it that I don't quite understand.

"He took hold of the horse's bridle, steering the chestnut into position in the winner's circle."

what does "steering the chestnut into position in the winnder's circle mean? apparently the horse had just won a race.

thanks for the advice.

English Help?
leading the horse to the place they want it to stand
Reply:The word "chestnut" is referring to the horse. It is common to call a horse by it's color (bay, roan, etc.)--chestnut is the color in this case.

The winner's circle is the traditional place in horse racing where the winning horse and jockey are celebrated, given flowers and photographed.

I don't see anything else that would confuse you about this passage...
Reply:The "winner's circle" is an area at a racetrack where awards/prizes are given out to the winning horses and their owners. "The chestnut" is describing the horse by its color (a reddish brown).
