Roasted Chestnuts?

I bought a sack of chestnuts at the grocery store today. I have never had them roasted...or in any for that matter but am still curious. Soooo...how do I roast them???

Roasting Chestnuts in the Oven



The best way to roast chestnuts is over the coals, but if that's not practical roast them over a gas burner, in a simple iron pan that has many holes punched through it (I sacrificed a colander) to allow the flames to touch the chestnuts. Now for the Oven treatment if it's to cold outside.

Preheat your oven to 425 F (210 C). Take your chestnuts and make a cut across the round side of each to keep them from exploding, and arrange them either on a rack or on a cookie sheet. Roast them until the skins have pulled back from the cuts and the nutmeats have softened (exactly how long will depend upon the chestnuts, but at least 15-20 minutes. Remove the nuts from the oven, make a mound of them in an old towel, wrap them up, squeeze them hard -- they should crackle -- and let them sit for a few minutes. They taste great
Reply:its an old wives tale..you dont roast chestnuts..you have to boil them first and then peel them and then place them on a cookie sheet and bake them in a 350 oven for 30min good luck..just kidding just bake the dam things for the love of god..in the oven..
Reply:please remember the most important thing to do is score the chestnuts(x's are the easiest way to do so). bake at 350. you can tell when they are done when the scoring peels away from the nuts.



my grandmother forgot to score them, and they started exploding in the oven. It was the biggest mess I've seen.

Reply:put a crisscross on them and put them in a hot oven for 20 minutes say 400 degrees when they start to open up add a dash of red wine and let them cook another 5 minutes and then enjoy oven roasted chestnuts another way is over the stove with a cast iron or a good pan and crisscross them and on a low flame cover them and slowly they will cook or they easy way crisscross them and put in microwave at 30 seconds intervals it should take a minute and they will be done
