I have no Idea how to cook them,, What temp oven do i need and how long for, Also are they good for you??
Just Bought some Chestnuts..Good Quality ones?
I soak mine for an hour or so, cut a slice across one side of the chestnut, then Microwave 'em (believe it or not) for 2 - 5 minutes or until I see them split open. Be sure your micro has a turntable that spins or they'll overcook and get rock hard.
This is a favorite wintertime snack of mine, so I don't have the patience for the oven.
And, inso far as nutrition? Here's what I pulled off a google search: similar in nutrition to brown rice. And excellent source of trace minerals, but unlike other nuts, low in fat.
Reply:I slit them horizontally (all the way from one side to the other) and then but them under a hot hot hot grill (250 degs). When they turn a bit black, turn them over and do the other side. This gives them an "off the fire" taste and they are soft and delicious inside. Eat with a glass of dessert wine or homemade gluhwein!
Reply:I have never eaten Chestnuts, but you can have this recipe...
"Chestnut Soup" - 12 servings
1 lb. chestnuts
3 1/2 cups chicken broth
2 tbsp. butter or margarine
1 carrot; diced
1 rib celery; sliced
1 small onion; finely chopped
2 cups heavy cream
Dash white pepper
1) With sharp knife, cut an X through shell of each chestnut. In 4-quart saucepan, place chestnuts; add water to cover. Over medium-high heat, heat to boiling. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 20 minutes. Drain; cool. Peel and discard all skin from chestnuts.
2) Return chestnuts to pan; add broth. Over medium-high heat, heat to boiling. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 30 minutes or until chestnuts are soft.
3) Meanwhile, in 10" skillet over medium heat, in hot butter, cook carrot, celery and onion until tender; set aside.
4) In covered blender container at low speed, blend 1/3 of the chestnuts and 1/3 of the broth with vegetables until very smooth. Return to saucepan. Repeat with remaining chestnuts and broth. Stir in cream and pepper; heat just to boiling, stirring constantly. Yields 7 cups.
