the best before date was only the 9th but they seem to smell a little mouldy and look slightly mouldy on the outside - will the nuts on the inside still be ok once I cook them?
I usually ignore useby dates as food is normally ok but have never bought chestnuts before.
Chestnuts - I've got a bag of chesnuts for roasting,?
Immerse in boiling water for 2 minutes, pour water down sink, and have a kettle with boiling water in it.
Using a very sharp knife split the flat side, pour on boiling water and boil for 8 minutes.
Remove one at a time and peel off the skin to expose the kernal.
KEEP in the water until you have finished, otherwise it will be impossible to remove the skin., smother in real butter and a little salt, and microwave for 2 minutes
If you intend roasting them split the skin as before, place on a wire mesh and place mesh on red-hot coals, turn them over so as not to burn too much.
Don't worry about a little mould it will be on the skin only.
Reply:Cook em' and try one. If they taste off discard them, if they taste okay then you have lost nothing. If they are okay send a couple to me cause I just love em'.
Reply:Give them a good wash off first, make a slit in each, then roast them in a 475degree oven for 20 to 25 Min's...or until the outer shell and the inner brown skin peels away from the nut......serve warm for best taste.
