do you need to soak them first so they sprout or just put them in a pot with garden soil. what is the right way up wide end or point please
How do you plant chestnuts as seeds?
Pointy end upwards, although they will turn their growth around if they land in soil the wrong way - roots are attracted to gravity and mosture while shoots seek light and known as negatively geotropic (grow away from gravity). Mother Nature is wonderful!
They will sprout without soaking (as they do in the wild), but it may hasten germination if the seed casing is softened.
Reply:We planted some about 15 years ago because of that exact question. We tried soaking and not soaking, planting in seed-mix, planting directly in the ground and planting either end up and neither end up.
They all sprouted within days of each other and seemed to be perfectly healthy. We only have room for one, so we just chose one at random. It's now about 20 feet tall.
Reply:Is this so your great-great grandchildren can have chestnuts? You'll never live long enough to pick any.
