What tree's do roasted chestnuts come from, we'be tried conkers and they dont seem to work??

Good Gods!! Conkers are poisonous!!! You're safer buying the chestnuts from the supermarket or greengrocer, it's very difficult to distinguish the horse chestnut tree from the edible chestnut one. Same as with mushrooms leave it to the professionals.

What tree's do roasted chestnuts come from, we'be tried conkers and they dont seem to work??
lol...they aren't roasted until you roast them and they are from the horse chestnut tree!
Reply:Sweet Chestnuts are for roasting and are usually flat on one side.

Horse Chestnuts are Conkers and are usually round.

Most supermarkets were selling Sweet chestnuts from November to December as some people use them for stuffing their Christmas fowl.
Reply:Conkers are poisonous.

Edible chestnuts are from a different kind of chestnut tree that produces sweet chestnuts.

You have to roast them though, they don't grow cooked.
Reply:They come from the SWEET chestnut tree, not the Horse chestnut. Unlike conkers, sweet chestnuts come in a prickly pod and are usually in clusters of 3 or 4. The leaves and bark of the sweet chestnut tree are different from the horse chestnut. Conkers are inedible even roasted.
Reply:Sweet or Spanish chestnuts come from the sweet chestnut tree, while conkers come from the horse chestnut tree. You can't eat the latter. As for gathering sweet chestnuts, there are woods full of them, but they are kept as secret as your wife's chastity belt's combination code.

It is not entirely true that horse chestnuts cannot be eaten. You have to process it thoroughly, e.g. boiling it at least 5 times, etc., to rid it of the toxin aesculin, which interferes with blood clotting. The extracts of horse chestnuts are therefore useful for medicinal purposes.
Reply:horse chestnut gives you conkers, sweet or european chestnut gives you the nuts you can eat
Reply:The edible ones come from the Spanish (or sweet) Chestnut tree.
Reply:conkers are from horse chestnut tree. you want the sweet chestnut tree for edible chestnuts. then you roast them. the seed pods are even more spikey and you usually get about 3 chestnuts per pod.

you won't get any from trees now though, wait till autumn.

happy eating.
