Why do chestnuts deter spiders?

We have a lot of spiders in our house,my wife is terrified of them.

What shall she do with the conkers

Why do chestnuts deter spiders?
Supposedly it's the oil in their cover that deters spiders, so I suppose they must be fresh to work. There is a proprietary brand of spider deterrent spray made from conkers which would be easier to use, and would be a lot easier to keep fresh. Good luck!
Reply:the shells contain alot of tealine which is potent and possibly dangerous to spiders
Reply:Don't bother it doesn't work, sorry you'll just have to be brave or get a cat(mine eats them up, there are substantially less in our house since i got cats)
Reply:prob knows that pooing one of them things is a no goer
