What colors are possible for this foal?

I might possibly breed my flea-bitten grey Connemara mare, who was born steel grey, to a liver chestnut Arab stallion. The mare has all grey family for at least 3 generations on her dam's side, and all bay family for at least 3 generations on her sire's side. Connemaras have a strong grey gene. The Arab has sired two lovely foals already, who were both chestnut, and his sire is grey and his dam is chestnut. The color of the foal is the least of my worries, but I am curious as to the possibilities.

What colors are possible for this foal?
My dad bred Quarter Horses for years (still does, in fact) and his stud was a sorrel Two Eyed Jack grandson. All three of Dad's mares were gray, eventually graying out to a flea-bitten gray color. He had probably fifteen foals result over the years from the stud and three mares. Of the ones I can remember off the top of my head, five foals were born bay or dark brown and changed to gray as they shed or matured; seven were born bay and stayed bay. The mares that produced primarily bay foals had both parents that were gray colored. So I'm not positive how the genetics work there, but in our case we had pretty much half and half results.

The gray is dominant. which provided the black base for the bay color. The sorrel is recessive, but did contribute enough for the majority of foals to be bay rather than gray.

Honestly, I think those are your only two possibilities: gray or bay.
Reply:If you know the genotypes (not just phenotypes) of the parents you can figure out the possibilities using this website: http://www.animalgenetics.us/CCalculator... .

I hope this helps (I believe you can get them blood tested rather cheaply to find out the information you need for the calculator, or just look back through the family tree...).
Reply:I think it can be anything you want to be.

But i think Grey will be it. Dont you think?
Reply:more than likely gray, as it is the most dominant color gene. i've heard that if a gray is one of the parents of a foal, it will turn out gray in its adult coat. i have seen a 1 foal so far not turn out gray, but more than likely, you're gonna get a gray horse.

other possiblities may be grulla (?), bay, chestnut, palomino (?), silver dun, red/ strawberry roan, or a gray with a few red hairs mixed in too.
Reply:Since the grey gene is dominant, most likely it will be grey. But if you really want to know, I believe you can got to "testing" and find out the types of colour genes and find a conclusion of the possible colours.

EDIT- GOD jew has it down-pat! LOL Good answer!
Reply:there are many!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:I'm betting on grey.
Reply:I will say grey because most colts take their mothers color. I bred a grey mare to a black and white tobiano and got a bay colt to dapple grey, to grey with age
Reply:Grey is a dominate gene but the mare only has 1 of them. So the foal would have a 50% chance of being or turning grey. Grey is NOT a color per say it is an effect to a color. Horses are born a color then turn grey just like a human and some do it faster. Some are born already grey others dont turn grey for years.the stud is a homozygous for the red gene. so that is all he can give the foal. His dam was chestnut you said and his sire grey but his sire also had the chestnut or red gene for him to be a chestnut. But even with the mare being grey and born steel grey she can and will give the foal color. So she either has the bay or black gene i would guess but she might have a hidden gene. So you have a 50% chance of grey, but the foal will still be a COLOR which could be Bay Black or chestnut since I dont know what the mare is. the pheniotype is what you can see another words Brown hair or blue eyes etc. geniotype is the Bb that describes the actual genes. the stud is lets say rr (means chestnut) but the mare is B? if the ? is an r and she gives it to the foal th baby will be chestnut. if she gives the B then the foal will be what ever the mare is (bay/black) if the ? is another B or b then the foal will be that color (black/bay) hope that helps
