Spots on my 23 year old gelding... what are they??
My horse is 23 years old. On each of his legs he has an area about the size of a half dollar that is like dry, layers of skin, like lots of dry grey moles. He is in a pasture, we use him as one our ranch horses, and we feed him grass hay and occasionally alfafa... do you have any idea what it could be??
Oh... and it's not chestnuts.... one is about an inch from the chestnut, and others are in varing places but only on his legs

I've had him for 8 years, we don't bath him with shampoo hardly ever, only if we need to... we use mane and tail... he is a bay gelding. It isn't another chestnut... i'm almost positive it's not ringworm... we have aroung 100 horses and none of our other geldings (or mares and studs for that matter) have any spots like these.... it doesn't seem like it painful to the touch, when we look at/ touch it, he doesn't really react!
Gelding has weird wart-like bumps in clusters on the leg???
It would be best to have your vet look at it. Most things like that are nothing, but sarcoid or some other type of skin tumor could be a problem. If it is sarcoid, try not to do anything - they tend to get worse if you mess with them. I spent 3 years and several thousand $$ getting rid of sarcoids on my mare.
Best to be safe, and have your vet look at any persistent skin lesion.
Reply:Hmm. It might be a skin infection. It might be scratches if his legs are white...
Reply:Could be fly bites or even nettle stings. My horse is allergic to fly bites and gets warty lumps so could be this? hope i helped.
Reply:It sounds like dermatitis. Dermatitis is condition where scaly dry patches occur.
To treat this condition contact your vet. Bathe the horse and scrub the area with soap. Also remove long hairs in the area.
But also dermatitis can be itchy. Does your horse rub the infected areas often? If not then it may just be summer sore wich are fly bites and they ussually occur in certain areas.
Best wishes!
Reply:Start of Sarcoids? Sun?
Reply:100 horses! *falls off of cliff thinking about all the stalls that have to be cleaned and bedded*
Reply:Horses can get warts!! I had a rescue horse that had them on his top lip. That is what it sounds like to me.... They are not painful, just looks bad. Where do you live having that many horses??? Myself on my way to WY on 151 acres!! Can't wait!
Reply:It is impossible to give a posative answer to anything like this without actually seeing it....However, if it just showed up on more than one leg I'd venture a guess that it is a case of bad
rain rot....the most common area is the leg as they get wet
and long hair doesn't dry thus the name...
It would be best to have another experienced horse person look at it before making any moves to cure it, as you really need to know what it is first. If rain rot.=
Clip the leg to open it to air...
Scrub with a gentle soap and water do not make it raw. Dry it good with a towel...Repeat cleaning and drying daily till it is gone.
There are medications for it but try the air first as it usually goes away with that. If it doesnt then use some benadine
mixed with water and scrub very gentle to get flakes off without turning it raw and bloody. Dry
Reply:Here are some possibilities-- sweet itch, rainrot, bug bites. but there could also be other seriouse signs you should watch out for-- oozing, blood, leison in the skin, heat, swelling, painful to touch, spreading of condition and more-- if those show up take him to the vet!
rain rot-

sweet itch-

(allergenic skin condition. maybe allergic to fly bites or bee stings, deer/horse flies?)
Reply:Are they bug bites? That is usually what a horses skin looks like when it has been irratated. If it is not bothering him, brush it off gently and maybe put a salve on it. It is always the best idea to give your vet a call though to truely find out.
