How much does a tree surgeon charge to cut down a Horse Chestnut, roughly twice the height of 2 storey house?

There is a tree on the edge of my land where ownership in not clear. Half of it is on my garden, half of it is on a verge of an A road. However I know there is no preservation order on the tree. It's twice the height of my house and a constant worry to my partner whenever the are high winds. How much would a tree surgeon charge - roughly - to cut the tree down?

There are too many variables to answer such a question. A lot depends on what's in the way - a tree in the middle of an empty field you can drop in one go, but one by the side of an A road will have to be dismantled bit by bit. Ball park, a couple of thousand pounds from what you say. Could be considerably more if it requires lane closures or temporary traffic lights. But the best thing to do is to get several quotes.

Tree surgery is a dangerous game, especially next to busy roads, so you really need to make sure the tree surgeon you pick is qualified and competant and has adequate insurance. The Arboricultural Association produce a useful leaflet on how to pick a tree surgeon (arborist) which you can download from

Reply:In Oregon that would be 2-250, cut to stump height, cut up in 16-18" fire burning size and limbs taken away or chipped and left in your yard for mulch.

what state do you live in.
Reply:We had a large tree on our property estimated and it was between 16-18 hundred
Reply:we just got a quote for something similar and I think it was around $2000 for everything. I would check and see if the city or county would be liable. This happened to my neighbor. The tree was close enough to the curb that the city (or county I'm not sure) paid for its removal. Especially if you can prove it's a potential hazard.
Reply:The one at the end of our Neighbours garden came down in November.

It was a poplar tree that was approx 60 years old and was twice as tall as our house and its branches spread about 65 feet at its widest point.

It was cut down and the stump ground and it cost £1900.00
