I have black hair but I want chestnut/reddy-brown streaks?

Do i need to bleach the hair first? My hair doesn't take colour very well..



(BTW: Would this be called highlights or lowlights??)

better of going to the salon for this one because yes you would have to high-light it first
Reply:as you have black hair it would be highlights because lowlights appear darker on hair. you don't need to bleach it first if you want you could just put highlights it in like that but a friend of mine with black hair had hers done and it came out more of a brown colour because of her dark hair.

i'm getting highlights next week and i have black hair, my hairdresser just told me that she would put a toner in it (think thats what it is) to make it abit lighter and then put the highlights on top so that it would show better and come out the colour i want. other people i know had it done like this and it was fine.

Reply:i have brown hair and i have mahogany [basically reddy brown] streaks. i dont reccomend them AT ALL. they face quicker then normal .

Reply:High lights. Lowlights is when you add darker streaks.
Reply:Don't bleach your hair first. What you need to use is a colour that is at least 6 times lighter than your own to get the lift.

Always do a strand test before doing it.

Without seeing how intensly black your hair is (every hair colour is different even black) i couldn't recommend an exact colour. but you shouldbe able to acheive it no problem. Using some of the blond shades will give this colour and it won't go to a blond shade due to the amount of natural pigment in your hair.
Reply:Being as your hair is very dark,any light chestnut colour should lift it to the shade you are looking for.It would be a lighter colour so it is technically highlights.
